Ready to Burn Quality Audit 2024

I am pleased to report that we have recently completed our annual Ready to Burn quality audit. This audit is required to retain our Quality Assurance accreditation for the supply of Domestic Solid Fuels.

The audit of our systems and materials is carried out by Woodsure who are appointed by the Government department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to run the Ready to Burn fuel certification scheme.

Our pre-sale quality testing systems have been scrutinised and approved ensuring that You the customer can rest assured that the firewood products we are supplying meets the requirements of the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020.

We are also required to submit a sample of the wood products that we sell for laboratory testing. In addition to the Soft wood and Hard wood we currently supply we added Kiln Dried firewood to our product list.

All the product supplied for laboratory testing meets the required standard.

We are pleased that we can continue to supply a Quality Assured product for our customers thus ensuring that YOU will meet the aforementioned standards when heating your homes with our firewood.

Ready to Burn Consumer Leaflet

We are suppliers of firewood which meets all current Air Quality (domestic solid fuels standards) (England) regulations 2020. This scheme is backed by DEFRA.

Suppliers of wood fuels to households are required to ensure their product is certified "Ready to Burn" which in turn means that the moisture content is less than 20%.

When Climbing Becomes too Dangerous

Felling Trees Without Climbing Them

When trees become damaged through natural decay or storm damage, but remain standing, or when they have partially fallen and have become rested on other trees, power/telephone cables, they become too dangerous to climb using rope and harness.

When James is called in to assess this type of work a close inspection and detailed risk assessment is required.

The outcome of the assessment is likely to require the use of a Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP).

The MEWP permits the arborist safe access into the tree without climbing. It provides a safe and secure working platform to enable the tree to be carefully dismantled without compromising other trees, power cables and telephone lines, nearby.

"Following recent high winds a tree is compromised and is now precariously leaning beside impacting telephone lines. Following a 'dynamic risk assessment' the site is made safe in-order that work can commence. The broken section of the tree is made safe, telephone lines are cleared and controlled dismantling begins. As James dismantles the broken section and Colin keeps the surrounding area clear of debris. The householder also gets a nice pile of logs for his wood burner." - Happy customer

At J. Firman Trees & Fences we have recently undertaken a review and update of our web site.

Following 12+ years of business development we have seen a number of activities come and go, the business has now settled into 3 main categories.

Trees / Hedges

All aspects of tree work are undertaken.

Whether you require ornamental trees to be carefully pruned to ensure they last long into the future or much bigger trees that need to be taken away completely.

We never like taking down and removing healthy trees but understand that in certain situations this may be the only option.

Trees are susceptible to storm damage and decay when this happens the job of taking down trees, that have been compromised in this way, gets VERY DANGEROUS.

At J. Firman Trees & Fences we undertake risk assessment on a daily basis. Whether it’s a written assessment prior to the job or a more dynamic risk assessment whilst the job is in progress.

The business owner James Firman is a certified arborist with more than 25 years working in the industry. He and his staff are fully trained to recognise and manage all aspects of tree work.

A significant proportion of our work is maintaining our clients hedges.

We are able to undertake most hedge works whether they are garden hedges or something more substantial at the road side.

Fencing / Landscaping

Over the years we have completed many fencing contracts.

From simple front garden / drive side fences to the more complex paddock fencing for horses and other livestock.

Landscaping is also a significant element of our work.

We have successfully completed a range of landscaping works over the years. Small to larger areas have been transformed to the complete satisfaction of our customers.

Firewood / Woodchip

An outcome of our work is that we are able to supply both Firewood and Woodchip.

Our company holds the Ready to Burn certification which requires that our firewood meets the Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020.

Woodchip is also an outcome of our work. We can supply woodchip which is a useful and natural weed suppressant and a great way of retaining moisture in the soil.

Many of our customers have also used woodchip in Chicken and Duck enclosures. The birds thrive from scratching through the chip for worms and other food bugs.

J.Firman Trees and Fences ensures wood fuel is Ready to Burn

As a local provider of wood fuel, J Firman Trees and Fences is making it easy for customers to find wood fuels that have been certified as Ready to Burn and that meet new legal requirements that came into force from 1 May 2021 in England.

Under the new Air Quality (Domestic Solid Fuels Standards) (England) Regulations 2020 that now apply in England, wood fuel sold in volumes under 2m3 must be certified as Ready to Burn. The regulations aim to prevent harmful pollution from domestic burning of all solid fuels by ensuring wood sold in volumes of under 2m3 is certified as having a moisture content of 20% or less. Customers buying loose wood in quantities of 2m3 or more must be given advice on how to store and season the fuel, giving them confidence that the wood they are burning is suitably dry before use.

The DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) Ready to Burn certification scheme is run by Woodsure. Woodsure is a non-profit organisation striving to raise the quality of wood fuel in the industry. For the past four years, Woodsure has been leading the way in championing the use of less polluting dry wood which is verified by its independent inspectors as having a moisture content of 20% less, meaning it burns with less smoke than wetter wood.

J Firman Trees and Fences customers can be confident that the wood fuel being sold is ready for immediate use by looking for the Ready to Burn logo along with the supplier’s name and unique Ready to Burn certification number.

James Firman, Managing Director at J Firman Trees and Fences, says: “The new legislation is all about helping to reduce particulate emissions and improve air quality. Certified wood fuels will give you more heat from each piece of Ready to Burn wood fuel burnt. They burn more efficiently than unseasoned, green wood and reduce the environmental impact of burning. Using proven dry wood is also better for your appliance and chimney and will help reduce maintenance and fuel costs.
